SaaS Spending Statistics 2026
Organizations spend an average of $55.7 million a year on SaaS across 305 applications, up 8% in 2026, according to Zylo. List prices are rising: Microsoft lifted Microsoft 365 E3 from $36 to $39 per user per month in July 2026, and Tropic sees AI-driven renewal price increases of 20 to 37%. IDC expects public cloud spending to pass $1 trillion in 2026, with SaaS more than half of it.

This page covers what businesses pay for software as a service: market size, spend per company and per customer, list price changes and renewal increases, the effect of AI features and usage-based pricing, and how widely SaaS is bought. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026, and cover worldwide markets, US-heavy buyer datasets and EU enterprises as noted in each figure.
SaaS is the largest part of the cloud bill. Gartner's November 2024 forecast put worldwide SaaS end-user spending at $299 billion for 2025, and IDC expects SaaS to account for more than half of a public cloud market that passes $1 trillion in 2026. Growth is slowing in mature markets: Gartner expects Australian SaaS spending to rise 13.8% in 2026, slower than the year before, as organizations prioritize license optimization and slower seat growth. Large vendors still grow fast, with ServiceNow's subscription revenue up 21% and HubSpot's up 20%.
At company level, the bill keeps rising even when the app count does not. Zylo found average annual SaaS spend of $55.7 million in 2026, up 8%, while portfolios held flat at 305 applications, and large enterprises' spend rose about 16%. Tropic, analyzing more than $18 billion of spend, found average spend up 50% for small and growth companies and nearly 58% for mid-market and enterprise customers.
Price is a main driver. Microsoft raised Microsoft 365 E3 by 8% and Business Basic by 16% on July 1, 2026, and Salesforce raised core editions by an average of 6% in August 2025. Tropic reports AI-driven renewal increases of 20 to 37% against a typical 3 to 9% uplift, though negotiation cut those asks by about 55%, with final uplifts averaging around 12%. Zylo found 78% of IT leaders hit unexpected charges tied to AI features or consumption pricing.
AI is changing both what companies buy and how they pay. Zylo saw spend on AI-native applications rise 108%, and Tropic found mid-market and enterprise spend on AI-native tools up 94% while spend on primarily SaaS tools grew 8%. Usage-based pricing is mainstream on the vendor side, with 85% of the 100 SaaS companies in Metronome's survey using it, and BetterCloud found more than a third of AI tools are billed only on usage or tokens. For buyers, that makes SaaS budgets harder to forecast than seat counts alone suggest.
SaaS market size
Gartner's last public worldwide breakdown of public cloud spending put SaaS at about $299 billion for 2025, the largest single cloud category, and IDC's 2026 forecast says SaaS still accounts for more than half of a public cloud market above $1 trillion. Country forecasts from Gartner show SaaS growth slowing in mature markets such as Australia as buyers trim licenses. Results from large vendors, including Microsoft 365 commercial cloud, ServiceNow and HubSpot, show the biggest suites still growing about 18% to 21% a year.

How much companies spend on SaaS
Zylo's figures come from the SaaS spend and license data it manages, which skews toward mid-size and large organizations, so the $55.7 million average is pulled up by very large customers; the median of $20.6 million is a better guide for a typical buyer. Spend is rising while application counts stay flat, so the increase comes from higher prices and more expensive tiers rather than more tools. Vendor disclosures give a seller-side view: HubSpot customers paid $11,800 a year on average in subscription revenue, while ServiceNow counts 680 customers above $5 million a year.

SaaS price increases and renewals
List prices for the most widely used suites went up in 2025 and 2026: Microsoft raised Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites by 5% to 33% from July 2026, and Salesforce raised core editions by an average of 6% in August 2025. Renewal asks tied to AI features are larger, and Tropic's data show they are negotiable, so the gap between first offer and final price is wide. Tropic and Zylo data come from their own customers' purchases and may not represent smaller buyers who pay list price.

AI's effect on SaaS spending
AI tools are where new SaaS money goes. Both Zylo and Tropic find spend on AI-native applications growing many times faster than spend on traditional SaaS, and Tropic finds spending on tools without meaningful AI flat or falling. On the vendor side, nearly every new SaaS company now builds AI into its core product, and High Alpha finds those companies grow faster. Growth rates for AI tools start from a small base, so dollar totals are still dominated by established suites.

Pricing models and contract terms
Seat-based pricing is giving way to hybrid and usage-based models, especially for AI products. That shifts cost risk to buyers: a contract negotiated on expected usage can overrun, and Tropic notes finance teams can sign a $100,000 contract and receive a $140,000 bill. Contract length also affects price, with shorter terms showing deeper average discounts in Tropic's 2025 data. Methodology note
We used market forecasts from Gartner and IDC for market size; vendor disclosures from Microsoft, Salesforce, ServiceNow and HubSpot for list prices, revenue and customers; official survey data from Eurostat for adoption; data from SaaS management and procurement platforms (Zylo, Tropic, BetterCloud) for spend, prices and contract terms; and SaaS industry surveys (Metronome, High Alpha, FinOps Foundation) for pricing models and practice. Platform data describe each company's own customer base, which skews toward mid-size and large organizations in North America and Europe, so averages may run higher than for small businesses. Gartner's most recent public worldwide SaaS breakdown is a November 2024 forecast for 2025. We dropped an index page that its publisher overwrites with each release. Figures are labeled with the year they describe. Every quote is re-fetched from the source by our checker. See how we rank and verify.
