This page tracks how much money moves through online retail and what it costs sellers to take part. It covers official US, UK, Canadian, EU and Chinese statistics, Adobe Analytics spending data, the National Retail Federation's holiday forecast, and quarterly filings from the largest commerce platforms. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026; the EU enterprise data describe 2024, the latest year Eurostat has published.

US online retail is growing at roughly twice the pace of total retail. The Census Bureau measured $340.2 billion of seasonally adjusted ecommerce sales in the second quarter of 2026, up 12.2% from a year earlier while total retail grew 6.7%. Ecommerce took 17.1% of retail sales that quarter, up from 16.4% across 2025, when online sales totaled $1,233.7 billion. Census figures are not adjusted for prices, so part of the growth reflects inflation rather than more goods sold.

Spending is concentrated in a few event windows. Adobe counted $257.8 billion of US online spending in the 2025 holiday season and forecasts $275.1 billion for November and December 2026, with Cyber Monday alone expected to reach $15.1 billion. For context, the National Retail Federation expects total holiday retail sales across stores and online of $1.013 trillion in 2026, up 4.2%. Adobe also counted $26.4 billion of US online spending during the four-day Prime Day event in June 2026 and puts electronics at $63.3 billion and apparel at $51.3 billion of holiday spend, the two largest categories.

Platform data show where that money lands. Amazon reported $201.9 billion of net sales in the third quarter of 2026, Shopify merchants processed $119 billion of GMV, eBay handled $23.2 billion and Etsy $2.6 billion. Outside the US, Shopee recorded $38.3 billion of GMV and MercadoLibre $21.9 billion in the second quarter of 2026, both growing far faster than US marketplaces. China's online retail sales of goods and services reached 15,147.1 billion yuan in the first nine months of 2026, up 4.4%, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

For sellers, the price of access keeps rising. Etsy's take rate, its revenue as a share of GMS, rose to 26.2% in the third quarter of 2026, driven mostly by advertising. eBay's first-party ad products earned $575 million in the quarter, up 16%. Online shares differ widely by country: the UK's Office for National Statistics put the online share of retail at 28.8% in September 2026, Statistics Canada measured 7.6% in August 2026, and Eurostat found e-sales made up 19.49% of EU enterprise turnover in 2024.

US ecommerce sales

The Census Bureau's quarterly survey is the official measure of US online retail sales. It counts goods sold online by retailers, not travel, tickets or food delivery, and it is not adjusted for price changes. Seasonally adjusted figures are best for comparing quarters; not adjusted figures show the real holiday spike in the fourth quarter. Growth accelerated in 2026 after a slower 2025.

Holiday and event spending online

Adobe Analytics measures transactions on US retail sites directly, so its event figures are the most detailed public view of peak online spending. Its forecasts are projections, not results, and its season covers only November and December. The National Retail Federation's forecast covers all retail channels, which puts the online total in context: Adobe's online forecast is a little over a quarter of NRF's all-channel holiday figure. A handful of days, led by Cyber Monday and Black Friday, carry a large share of the season.

What selling online costs: fees, ads and discounts

The money a seller keeps depends on marketplace fees, advertising and payment costs. Etsy's take rate is the clearest public measure of the total cut a marketplace takes, and advertising is the part rising fastest at Etsy, eBay and Amazon. Payment costs vary by card type; the Federal Reserve caps debit interchange only for large issuers. Discount depth matters too, because peak events trade margin for volume.

Methodology note

We chose figures that describe market size, spending, platform volume and the cost of selling, and took each one from the agency or company that produced it: national statistics offices in the US, UK, Canada, China and the EU, the Federal Reserve, Adobe Analytics, the National Retail Federation, and company earnings releases and shareholder letters. We cite dated releases rather than pages that are overwritten each month or quarter. Definitions differ. Census counts retail goods sold online by US retailers, China's NBS includes online services, Statistics Canada excludes travel and ticket sales, Eurostat measures enterprise e-sales including EDI orders, NRF's holiday total covers all channels, and platforms report GMV or GMS before fees and returns. Adobe and NRF forecasts are projections. None of the dollar figures are adjusted for inflation, and platform totals overlap with national totals, so they should not be added together. Every quote is re-fetched from the source by our checker. See how we rank and verify.
