Web Hosting Statistics 2026
Spending on cloud infrastructure services reached $168 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 55% year over year, according to Synergy Research Group. Entry-level hosting remains cheap: DigitalOcean bundled Droplets start at $4 a month and AWS Lightsail runs a Linux instance for $5 a month. Verisign counted 182.5 million .com and .net domains at the end of September 2026, and the HTTP Archive found WordPress powered roughly 64% of CMS-driven sites in 2025.

This page gathers figures on the money side of web hosting: the size of the cloud infrastructure market, revenue and customer counts at listed hosting companies, published prices for entry-level plans, domain registrations, which providers and platforms serve the web's sites, and what speed and power cost. Data cover 2024 to 2026 and are global unless noted. Prices are list prices in US dollars as published by the provider on the check date.
The top of the hosting market is growing faster than at any point in the past eight years. Synergy Research Group measured $168 billion of cloud infrastructure service spending in the third quarter of 2026, up 55% from a year earlier, and $558 billion over the trailing twelve months. Amazon held 26% of that market, Microsoft 19% and Google 16%. Synergy also reported generative AI cloud services growing at 165% a year in the second quarter of 2026.
Companies selling hosting to small businesses and developers are growing more slowly, with some exceptions. GoDaddy reported $1.3 billion of quarterly revenue, up 6%, from 20.5 million customers, IONOS grew first-half revenue 6.9% and reached 6.91 million customers, and Wix reported $563 million, up 15%. DigitalOcean's revenue rose 40% to $321 million and Cloudflare's rose 36% to $696.1 million. Akamai's cloud infrastructure revenue grew 39% from a small base of $99 million.
For the buyer, the entry price of hosting is low. DigitalOcean's bundled Droplets start at $4 a month, AWS Lightsail sells a Linux instance with 1 GB of memory for $5 a month, and Cloudflare's paid Workers plan starts at $5 a month. Extras add up: Lightsail charges from $0.09 per GB of data transfer above the bundle quota, and a managed database on DigitalOcean starts at $15 a month. Some basics are now free: ISRG's Let's Encrypt served 762 million websites with free certificates in 2025, up from 492 million.
Speed and power are the hidden costs. The HTTP Archive found that only 48% of mobile websites passed Core Web Vitals in 2025 and 44% had a good time to first byte, a measure that depends heavily on the host. Most HTML pages still come straight from origin servers: only 35% of HTML requests went through a CDN, and Cloudflare served 58% of those. Underneath, the IEA estimates data centres used 415 TWh of electricity in 2024, about 1.5% of world demand, and projects around 945 TWh by 2030.
Cloud infrastructure market size
Synergy Research Group's estimates cover infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and hosted private cloud, the layer most hosting products are built on. Synergy says growth has accelerated for twelve quarters in a row, with generative AI services the fastest-growing part, and the market is concentrated: three providers hold about three fifths of it. Shared and managed website hosting is a much smaller slice that Synergy does not break out.

Revenue and customers at hosting companies
Listed hosting and website companies report quarterly or half-yearly, which makes them the best public check on demand from small businesses and developers. Revenue at the mass-market hosts GoDaddy and IONOS is growing in single digits, Wix in the low teens, while DigitalOcean, Cloudflare and Akamai's cloud unit are growing far faster. Customer counts are not comparable across companies because each defines a customer differently.

Who hosts the web
No single source measures web hosting share without a moving daily tracker, so this section uses dated 2025 and 2026 measurements. The HTTP Archive crawls millions of sites each year and shows Cloudflare far ahead among CDNs for HTML pages, though most HTML is still served straight from origin servers. Netcraft's monthly survey counts sites by web server software, and ISRG's figures show how free certificates from Let's Encrypt now cover hundreds of millions of sites. WordPress still runs about two thirds of CMS-driven sites, while Shopify and Wix grow from smaller bases.

Site speed and data center power
Hosting quality shows up in speed. Time to first byte depends mostly on the server and network, and Core Web Vitals affect user experience, yet about half of mobile sites still fail them. Power is a main running cost behind hosting; the IEA's 2030 figure is a projection, while the 2024 consumption estimate is the latest measured baseline it publishes.

Synergy Research Group estimates that enterprises spent $168 billion on cloud infrastructure services in the third quarter of 2026, up 55% year over year, and $558 billion over the trailing twelve months. Amazon held 26% of the market, Microsoft 19% and Google 16%.
How much does basic web hosting cost?
On developer clouds, a small server starts at $4 per month on DigitalOcean and $5 per month on AWS Lightsail, based on their published US prices in November 2026. AWS's own example of a WordPress site with a CDN and object storage on Lightsail comes to $8.50 per month.
Which companies serve the most websites?
Usage depends on the layer. Among HTML pages delivered through a CDN on mobile in 2025, the HTTP Archive found Cloudflare served 58%, Google 21% and Amazon CloudFront 7%. ISRG's Let's Encrypt provided free certificates to 762 million websites in 2025, and WordPress powered roughly 64% of CMS-driven sites.
How many .com domains are there?

Methodology note
We chose figures that describe hosting spending, provider revenue, list prices, domains, usage and the running costs of hosting, and took each from the organization that produced the data: Synergy Research Group for market size, company earnings releases for revenue and customers, provider pricing pages for prices, Verisign for .com and .net counts, the HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025, Netcraft's dated monthly survey and ISRG's 2025 annual report for usage, and the IEA for electricity. We avoid trackers that overwrite their numbers daily, so usage figures carry the date of the crawl or survey. HTTP Archive and Netcraft count websites or requests, not revenue, and use different samples. Prices are published US dollar list prices on the check date and exclude taxes and promotional discounts. Company metrics are not comparable across companies because each defines customers and revenue segments differently; IONOS reports in euros. Every quote is re-fetched from the source by our checker.
