How this ranking works

One method for every tool. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run hands-on tests. Value carries the most weight.

Full method
40%
35%
25%
ValueFeaturesEase of use

This list is for individuals and families choosing a password manager and comparing what a year of protection costs and what the free plans leave out. We compared documented features and published prices on each vendor's own site in November 2026. Rankozo weights value at 40%, features at 35% and ease of use at 25%, so a cheap plan with the basics covered can outrank a pricier app with more extras. Starting prices are the cheapest paid personal plan per month on annual billing, in USD. Four vendors only showed local currency prices from our location, so their prices are marked as pending.

The verdict

Start with Bitwarden. The free plan has no device or password limit, and the paid tiers are the cheapest here at $19.80 a year for one person or $47.88 a year for six. Proton Pass is the closest alternative, with a free plan that also syncs everywhere and 10 hide-my-email aliases. If you will pay more for refined apps and family admin tools, 1Password costs $3.99 a month for one person or $5.99 for five at regular prices. Families on a tight budget should compare Bitwarden Families, RoboForm Family at $47.75 a year and Proton Pass Family at $59.88 a year.

Best forIndividuals and families who want the most capable free plan and the lowest paid price.

Bitwarden gives away more than any rival in this list. Every account, including the free one, stores unlimited passwords and syncs across unlimited devices through browser, mobile and desktop apps. The free tier also includes passkey storage, a username and password generator, email alias integration, encrypted export and Bitwarden Send, plus sharing with one other person. Premium costs $1.65 a month, billed annually at $19.80, and adds an integrated authenticator, file attachments, emergency access and security reports. The Families plan is $3.99 a month, billed at $47.88 a year, and gives six people premium accounts with unlimited sharing and collections, which works out to under $8 per person. The code is open source and the vendor describes its encryption as zero-knowledge. The tradeoff is polish: the apps are functional rather than refined, and some settings take more clicks than in 1Password. For anyone who mainly wants strong passwords synced everywhere for little or no money, it is the clear first pick.

    • ✓Free plan has no device or password cap
    • ✓Cheapest paid plans in this list for one person and for six
    • ✓Open source code with zero-knowledge encryption
    • ✕Free sharing is limited to one other user
    • ✕Authenticator codes and file attachments need Premium
    • ✕Interface is plainer than 1Password or Dashlane

    Premium:

Bottom line: The best value password manager: a free plan with no device limit and Premium for $19.80 a year. Pick 1Password instead if app polish matters more than price.

Best forPeople who want email aliases alongside their passwords and a generous free tier.

Proton Pass is the strongest free alternative to Bitwarden and adds something no other app here builds in: hide-my-email aliases. The free plan stores unlimited logins, notes and credit cards, syncs across unlimited devices, supports passkeys, flags weak and reused passwords and includes 10 aliases, so you can sign up for shops and newsletters without handing out your real address. Pass Plus is $2.99 a month, billed at $35.88 every 12 months, and adds unlimited aliases, a built-in 2FA authenticator, vault and link sharing, dark web monitoring, file attachments, folders, emergency access and a command line interface. Pass Family costs $4.99 a month, billed at $59.88 a year, for six Pass Plus accounts and an admin panel. Proton Unlimited bundles Pass with Mail, Calendar, VPN and Drive for $119.88 a year. The paid tier costs nearly twice as much as Bitwarden Premium, and month-to-month billing is $4.99. For people who care about inbox privacy, the aliases justify the difference.

    • ✓Free plan syncs across unlimited devices
    • ✓Email aliases help keep your real address private
    • ✓30-day money-back guarantee
    • ✕Authenticator and vault sharing need Pass Plus
    • ✕Pass Plus costs more than Bitwarden Premium
    • ✕Monthly billing costs $4.99 instead of $2.99
    Free plan:

    $35.88 per year
    Pass Family:
    $59.88 per year, 6 users

Bottom line: A generous free plan plus email aliases make Proton Pass the best pick for privacy-focused users. It costs more than Bitwarden once you pay.

Best forHouseholds that want refined apps and family admin controls and are happy to pay for them.

1Password has the most complete feature set for personal use. Apps cover macOS, iOS, watchOS, Windows, Android and Linux, with browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox and Brave. Watchtower flags weak, reused and breached credentials, Travel mode hides chosen vaults when you cross a border, and you can share an item with anyone, even someone without an account, with an expiry date and a sharing history. Security combines your account password with a Secret Key, and each user gets 1GB of storage. The Individual plan costs $3.99 a month billed yearly at the regular price, and Families costs $5.99 a month for five people with unlimited shared vaults and simple admin controls. New customers who subscribe directly and pay yearly get the first year at $2.99 and $4.49. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial, which is why it ranks below Bitwarden and Proton Pass on Rankozo's value-heavy weighting. If you want the easiest app to hand to less technical relatives, the extra cost buys real convenience.

    • ✓Broadest set of personal features in this list
    • ✓Account password plus Secret Key adds a second layer of protection
    • ✓Promotional first year at $2.99 a month for new direct customers
    • ✕No free plan, only a 14-day trial

Bottom line: The most polished and feature-rich option, at $3.99 a month regular. Price and the missing free plan keep it third.

Best forBudget buyers who want a cheap Premium plan and a family plan under $50 a year.

RoboForm is a low-cost, no-fuss option for people who mainly want passwords filled in and backed up. The free plan stores unlimited passwords on a single device, which suits someone who only manages logins on one computer. Premium removes that limit and costs $2.49 a month billed annually, renewing at $29.88 a year, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The pricing page lists two-factor login options including hardware security keys, alerts when a saved password turns up in a breach, data breach monitoring for five email addresses, an integrated TOTP authenticator, passwordless sign-in, emergency access and secure sharing of items and folders. A local only mode keeps data and backups on your device. The Family plan covers five Premium accounts for $3.98 a month, renewing at $47.75 a year, almost exactly Bitwarden's six-person price. It lacks Proton's aliases and 1Password's travel features, and the free tier is the tightest of the full-featured apps. For a cheap paid plan with breach monitoring, it is a solid choice.

    • ✓Premium renews at $29.88 a year
    • ✓Family plan for five costs $47.75 a year
    • ✓30-day money-back guarantee
    • ✕Free plan works on one device only
    • ✕Family plan covers five accounts, one fewer than Bitwarden
    • ✕Fewer sharing and privacy extras than Proton Pass
    Free plan:

    Premium:
    $29.88 per year
    Family:
    $47.75 per year, 5 accounts

Best forPeople who want to choose where their vault is stored and pay a low yearly price.

Enpass takes a different approach from the cloud-hosted apps above. Your encrypted vault lives in a cloud account you already have, such as iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box or Nextcloud, and Enpass says the data never sits on its own servers. Encryption is AES-256 with 320,000 PBKDF2 rounds through the open-source SQLCipher engine, and you can add a keyfile on top of the master password. Premium costs $1.99 a month billed annually and adds unlimited items and vaults, a security dashboard, an integrated TOTP authenticator, two-factor and passkey monitoring, and breach and dark web alerts. The Family plan is $3.99 a month for up to six people. Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, with extensions for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Brave, Vivaldi and Opera. The free plan is only useful as a trial, since it caps you at 25 items. Because syncing runs through your own storage, setup takes a little more thought than with Bitwarden or Proton Pass.

    • ✓Encrypted data never sits on Enpass's servers
    • ✓Premium at $1.99 a month is the second-cheapest paid plan here
    • ✓Family plan covers up to six people
    • ✕Free plan stops at 25 items in one vault
    • ✕You manage your own cloud storage and its account security
    • ✕Fewer sharing tools than Bitwarden or 1Password

    Family:
$3.99 per month, up to 6 people

Best forExisting Nord customers and users who want a simple app with password health and breach scanning.

NordPass keeps things simple. Every plan includes autosave and autofill, and Premium adds access on multiple devices, Password Health checks, a Data Breach Scanner and file attachments. The Family plan gives six people their own accounts with the same features. The free plan is the main catch for budget buyers: according to the pricing page it does not include access on multiple devices, Password Health or the breach scanner, so it suits one device rather than a phone and laptop together. Signing up for Free includes a 30-day Premium trial, and personal plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee. From our location the pricing page showed prices only in Polish zloty and euros, with the lowest rates tied to two-year terms, so we could not confirm a USD price and have marked it pending. The app is easy to pick up, but on Rankozo's value weighting it trails Bitwarden and Proton Pass, whose free plans sync across devices.

    • ✓Free plan to try the core autofill features
    • ✓Family plan covers six accounts
    • ✓30-day money-back guarantee on personal plans
    • ✕Free plan does not include access on multiple devices

Best forFamilies that want five private vaults with shared file storage included.

Keeper sells two personal plans. Keeper Unlimited covers unlimited password, identity and payment storage, unlimited devices and sync, biometric login, secure record sharing, emergency access, a web app and 24/7 support. Keeper Family adds five private vaults and 10GB of secure file storage. Sharing works through Shared Folders with view, edit or share permissions, and One-Time Share creates a time-limited link to a single record for someone outside your plan. BreachWatch dark web monitoring and extra file storage are add-ons on the Unlimited plan, and Keeper also sells Plus bundles that combine them. There is a 30-day free trial but no permanent free plan on the personal pricing page. The page loaded its prices with scripts and showed blank amounts in our check, so we have marked pricing as pending. Keeper's features are strong, but paying extra for monitoring and the lack of a free tier push it down a value-weighted ranking.

    • ✓Family plan includes 10GB of file storage
    • ✓Time-limited One-Time Share links for people outside your plan

Best forTechnical users who want a free vault file they control, with no account or subscription.

KeePassXC is the only option here with no subscription at all. It saves usernames, passwords, URLs, attachments and notes in an offline encrypted file, and the project says no data is stored on remote servers. You can put that file anywhere, including a private or public cloud folder, and the app can autofill credentials into other programs. The code is open source under GPLv3, and version 2.7.9 earned a first-level security certification (CSPN) from France's national cybersecurity agency, ANSSI. Version 2.8.0 became the stable release in October 2026. The project lists Windows, macOS and Linux, so syncing to other devices is up to you, for example by keeping the file in a cloud folder. That makes it a poor fit for a family that wants shared vaults out of the box, but an excellent fit for one technical person who wants full control and zero cost.

    • ✓Costs nothing, with no ads or trackers
    • ✓No data stored on remote servers
    • ✓Independently certified by a national security agency
    • ✕No built-in sync between devices
    • ✕The project lists desktop apps only: Windows, macOS and Linux

Best forUsers who want built-in phishing warnings and are willing to pay more for them.

Dashlane's personal plan leans on safety extras. Its newest feature, Scam Protection, analyzes the sites you visit and warns you about suspicious ones before you log in or share information. The vault syncs across devices, browsers and operating systems, AI-powered autofill fills logins, the generator creates strong passwords, and alerts walk you through next steps when a password is weak or compromised or your data shows up in a breach. Dashlane describes its security as zero-knowledge, and a Friends and Family plan lets several people share a subscription. There is a 14-day free trial but no free plan on the personal pages, and the pricing page we fetched only showed business plans, so we could not confirm a USD personal price and have marked it pending. The apps are easy to use, but without a free tier or a published low price, Dashlane sits near the bottom of a value-weighted list.

Best forExisting LastPass users who want to stay on a familiar app.

LastPass still offers a free plan, but with a firm limit: it works on one device type, so you choose desktop or mobile, not both. Free includes unlimited password storage, autofill, dark web monitoring and basic sharing of one password with one person at a time. Premium lifts the device limit, adds sharing with multiple people, emergency access, hardware multifactor keys such as YubiKey, more passwordless options including FIDO2, and personal support from the LastPass care team. Families gives six people Premium accounts, each with an independent encrypted vault that even the family admin cannot read. Both paid plans come with a 30-day free trial and no credit card. The pricing page filled its prices with scripts, so we could not read a USD price and have marked it pending. Bitwarden and Proton Pass both sync free plans across every device, which leaves LastPass at the bottom of this ranking on value.

    • ✓Free plan includes dark web monitoring
    • ✓Families covers six people with separate vaults
    • ✓30-day free trials of Premium and Families

What to check before you pay

01

Read the free plan limits before you commit

Free plans differ more than paid ones. Bitwarden and Proton Pass let you store unlimited logins on unlimited devices. RoboForm Free keeps unlimited passwords on a single device, LastPass Free is limited to one device type, Enpass Free stops at 25 items, and the NordPass Free plan does not include access on multiple devices. 1Password, Dashlane and Keeper offer trials instead of a free plan.

02

Compare the yearly bill and the renewal price

Most vendors quote a monthly figure that is only available on a yearly plan. Bitwarden Premium is billed at $19.80 a year, RoboForm Premium renews at $29.88 a year and Proton Pass Plus is billed at $35.88 every 12 months. 1Password's $2.99 a month is a first-year promotion for new customers paying yearly; the regular price is $3.99 a month.

03

Count the people in your family plan

Bitwarden Families, Proton Pass Family, Enpass Family, NordPass Family and LastPass Families cover six people. 1Password Families covers five, as do RoboForm Family and Keeper Family. Per person, Bitwarden Families costs under $8 a year.

04

Decide where your vault should live

Most apps here store an encrypted vault on the vendor's servers and sync it for you. Enpass keeps the vault in your own cloud storage, such as iCloud, Google Drive or Dropbox, and KeePassXC saves an offline encrypted file you place wherever you like. Those two give more control but leave syncing and backups to you.

FAQ

What is the best free password manager?
