  The average US domestic airfare was $445 in the second quarter of 2026, the highest quarterly fare the Bureau of Transportation Statistics has recorded before inflation, and the BLS airline fares index was up 22.4% in the year to September 2026. IATA links the rise to jet fuel, which it expects to average $152 a barrel in 2026, almost 70% above 2025, while US airlines also collected $7.4 billion in baggage fees in 2025.
