AI Investment Statistics 2026
Gartner forecasts worldwide AI spending of about $2.0 trillion in 2026, up from nearly $1.5 trillion in 2025. Stanford's 2026 AI Index puts US private AI investment at $285.9 billion in 2025, 23 times China's, and the largest buyers keep raising capital budgets: Amazon expects about $220 billion of capital expenditures in 2026 and Meta $135 billion to $145 billion.

This page tracks where money for artificial intelligence comes from and where it goes: market-wide spending forecasts, private and venture investment, the capital budgets of the largest cloud and platform companies, AI chip revenue, funding rounds for model developers, enterprise spending on generative AI, and public programs in Europe and the UK. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026. Amounts are in US dollars unless marked in euros or pounds.
AI spending is now measured in trillions. Gartner expects worldwide AI spending to grow from $988 billion in 2024 to nearly $1.5 trillion in 2025 and more than $2 trillion in 2026, with AI-enabled smartphones, servers and services making up the largest pieces. Gartner's narrower generative AI forecast put 2025 spending at $644 billion, and 80% of that goes to hardware. The money is concentrated in physical infrastructure rather than software subscriptions.
Private capital follows the same pattern. Stanford HAI reports US private AI investment of $285.9 billion in 2025, more than 23 times China's $12.4 billion, after $109.1 billion in 2024. Crunchbase, which counts venture rounds, puts 2025 AI funding at $211 billion, up 85%, and found foundational model developers raised $178 billion in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Single rounds now rival public offerings: OpenAI raised $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation in March 2025, and Anthropic raised $30 billion at $380 billion in February 2026 and then $65 billion at $965 billion in May 2026.
The largest checks are written by the platforms themselves. Amazon expects about $220 billion in cash capital expenditures in 2026, Meta has guided to $135 billion to $145 billion after spending $72.22 billion in 2025, and Microsoft planned about $80 billion for AI-enabled datacenters in fiscal 2025 alone. Much of that money ends up at Nvidia, whose data center revenue reached $89.0 billion in a single quarter in mid-2026, up 117% from a year earlier. Nvidia also says it is working with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to mobilize over $500 billion of third-party capital for AI infrastructure.
Enterprise software spending is smaller but growing fastest. Menlo Ventures counts $37 billion of enterprise generative AI spending in 2025, up from $11.5 billion in 2024, with $19 billion going to applications and $4.0 billion to coding tools alone. Governments are adding public money on top: the European Commission launched InvestAI to mobilize €200 billion, and the UK announced £14 billion of private data center commitments alongside its AI action plan. Most of the totals on this page are forecasts, pledges or multi-year commitments, so they describe intent as much as cash already spent.
Worldwide AI spending forecasts
Gartner's totals include AI features built into phones and PCs, so a large share of the trillion-dollar figure is hardware rather than AI software or services. The generative AI forecast tells the same story: Gartner expected 80% of 2025 generative AI spending to go to hardware. These are forecasts from a single research firm and are revised as budgets change, so treat the 2026 total as a direction rather than a precise number. The IEA's market value figure measures investor expectations, not spending.

Private and venture investment in AI
Stanford HAI's AI Index is the most consistent long-run series for private AI investment. It shows US investment more than doubling between 2024 and 2025 and pulling far ahead of every other country. Crunchbase uses a narrower venture definition and gets a lower total, $211 billion for 2025, but shows the same acceleration and heavy concentration in a handful of model developers. Stanford notes that private figures understate China, where government guidance funds are not counted as private investment.

Big Tech capital spending on AI
Capital expenditure is where the largest AI budgets show up. Companies report it as total capex, which also covers offices, warehouses and non-AI servers, so these figures are an upper bound on AI spending by each company. Meta narrowed its 2026 range upward in October 2026, and Amazon reaffirmed its expectation of about $220 billion. These figures come from earnings releases and are not adjusted for fiscal years, which differ between companies.

Where AI capital spending lands: chips and cloud revenue
One company's capex is another company's revenue. Nvidia's data center segment is the clearest measure of how much of the platforms' spending goes to AI accelerators, and it more than doubled year over year in mid-2026. Cloud revenue at AWS and Microsoft shows the other side: customers renting that capacity. Comparing the two helps gauge whether AI infrastructure spending is being matched by paying demand.

Funding rounds and commitments for model developers
Funding for frontier model developers has reached sizes that rival the capex budgets of large public companies. Anthropic's valuation rose from $183 billion in September 2025 to $965 billion in May 2026, when it reported run-rate revenue above $47 billion. Infrastructure commitments such as Stargate are multi-year plans with partners, not cash already spent, so they should not be added to annual spending figures.

Enterprise spending on generative AI
Menlo Ventures' estimate covers what enterprises spend on generative AI software and model access, not hardware, which is why it is far smaller than Gartner's totals. It shows spending more than tripling in a year, with applications taking more than half and coding tools the largest single category. Most companies now buy rather than build. Menlo is an investor in several companies in this market, so its market share figures should be read alongside other sources.

Public AI investment programs in Europe and the UK
Public programs are smaller than private budgets and mostly work by mobilizing private money rather than spending it directly. These amounts are pledges over several years and are not directly comparable with annual capex.

Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May 2026 after a $30 billion round in February 2026. OpenAI raised $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation in March 2025.
Methodology note
We used figures from the organizations that produced them: forecasts from Gartner, investment series from Stanford HAI's AI Index and Crunchbase's venture funding data, a market value estimate from the IEA, earnings releases from Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Nvidia, funding announcements from OpenAI, Anthropic and Apple, enterprise spending estimates from Menlo Ventures, and official announcements from the European Commission and the UK government. These measures overlap and should not be added together: one company's capex is another's revenue, and Gartner's totals include consumer devices. Company capex covers all capital spending, not only AI. Funding and infrastructure commitments are multi-year pledges. Menlo Ventures invests in some of the companies it covers.
