Data Center Spending Statistics 2026

Gartner forecasts worldwide data center systems spending of $879 billion in 2026, up 73.8%, and $1.37 trillion in 2027. The IEA says capital spending by the largest technology companies passed $400 billion in 2025 and is set to rise another 75% in 2026, led by Amazon's planned $220 billion. IDC expects AI infrastructure spending of $497 billion in 2026, while the IEA projects data center electricity use to roughly double from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030.

This page collects figures on how much money is going into data centers: market forecasts for data center hardware, capital expenditure by Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta and Oracle, spending on AI servers and physical infrastructure, construction and leasing activity, electricity demand, and the power costs that data center growth is pushing onto grids. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026 and are worldwide; the construction, leasing and power market data focus on the United States and North America. The US electricity figures from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory describe 2023 and are included as the most recent federal baseline.

Data center spending is now the fastest growing part of the IT budget by a wide margin. Gartner's October 2026 forecast puts data center systems spending at $879 billion in 2026, up 73.8%, and $1.37 trillion in 2027, compared with $506 billion in 2025. Dell'Oro Group measured data center capex growth of 92% in the second quarter of 2026, and JLL estimates the sector will need up to $3 trillion of investment over the five years to 2030.

Most of that money comes from a handful of companies. The IEA says capex by the five largest technology companies passed $400 billion in 2025 and is set to rise 75% in 2026. Company filings show the scale quarter by quarter: Amazon spent $77.3 billion on property and equipment in the third quarter of 2026 and expects about $220 billion for the year, Alphabet spent $51.4 billion, Microsoft $39.4 billion and Meta $34.9 billion. Oracle's capex reached $28.5 billion in a single quarter, more than half of its whole previous fiscal year, backed by $664 billion of contracted future revenue.

The hardware inside the buildings takes the largest share. IDC tracked $89.7 billion of AI infrastructure spending in the first quarter of 2026, almost all of it on servers, and raised its 2026 forecast to $497 billion. NVIDIA's data center revenue reached $89.0 billion in a single quarter. Physical infrastructure such as cooling and power equipment is smaller but still growing quickly: Dell'Oro puts it at $14 billion a quarter, with thermal management growing more than 40%.

Power is the constraint and an increasingly visible cost. The IEA expects data center electricity use to roughly double to 950 TWh by 2030, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates US data centers could use 6.7% to 12% of the country's electricity by 2028. In PJM, the largest US grid, the market monitor found that data center load raised customers' capacity bills by about $20 billion across three auctions and added $11.11 per MWh to the average wholesale cost of power in the first half of 2026. In North America, CBRE reports a record 7,481 MW under construction but vacancy of just 1.4%, so rents keep rising.

01

Total data center spending

Gartner's data center systems category covers servers, storage and networking equipment bought for data centers, and its forecast has been revised upward several times during 2026. Dell'Oro's capex tracking and JLL's investment estimate use wider definitions that include buildings, land and power infrastructure, so the totals are not directly comparable. All three point the same way: spending is growing faster than at any point in the history of these series, driven by AI hardware and higher memory prices.

Hyperscaler capital expenditure

Capital expenditure in these filings covers all property and equipment, not only data centers, but each company says AI and cloud infrastructure account for most of the increase. Definitions differ: Meta includes principal payments on finance leases, Amazon reports purchases before and after incentives, and Microsoft separately discloses data center leases that have been signed but not yet started. Quarterly spending at Amazon, Microsoft and Oracle has roughly doubled or tripled in a year, which is why company totals for 2026 far exceed earlier forecasts.

03

AI server and infrastructure spending

Servers account for nearly all AI infrastructure spending in IDC's tracking, and accelerated servers built around GPUs and custom chips are the main reason data center budgets have grown so fast. NVIDIA's data center revenue is a useful cross-check because most AI servers contain its chips. Spending on the physical plant, such as cooling, power distribution and backup power, is an order of magnitude smaller than server spending but is growing at more than 20% a year, with liquid cooling the fastest part.

04

Construction and capacity

The Census Bureau counts data centers inside its private office category, so office construction spending has risen sharply even as conventional office building has fallen. CBRE's market data show that new supply is being leased before it is finished, which keeps vacancy near record lows and pushes rents up. Synergy and JLL both expect global capacity to roughly double within a few years, but equipment lead times, power connections and local permitting are slowing how fast projects can be completed.

05

Data center electricity demand

Electricity is the main operating cost of a data center and increasingly the factor that decides where and when new capacity can be built. The IEA's global estimates and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's US estimates use different methods and years, so they should be read side by side rather than combined. Both expect consumption to roughly double or more by the end of the decade, with AI-focused facilities growing fastest. Efficiency gains at the building level have mostly stalled: Uptime Institute's average PUE has hovered around 1.5 for years.

Power costs and grid impacts

PJM, the grid operator for 13 states and Washington, D.C., hosts the world's largest cluster of data centers in Northern Virginia, so its capacity market shows how data center demand feeds into electricity prices. PJM's own figures and those of its independent market monitor differ in method: the monitor estimates what prices would have been without data center load. The costs fall on all customers in the region, not only on data center operators. For operators, power is also expensive to idle: the IEA notes that renting AI-optimized capacity costs far more than other sources of grid flexibility.

Are data centers raising electricity prices?

In PJM, the largest US grid, the independent market monitor estimates that data center load raised capacity costs for customers by about $20 billion across three auctions and added $11.11 per MWh, or 9.7%, to the average wholesale power cost in the first half of 2026.

Methodology note

We selected figures from primary sources only: company earnings releases and SEC filings, the U.S. Census Bureau, the International Energy Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, PJM and its independent market monitor, and research firms that publish their own tracking data (Gartner, IDC, Dell'Oro Group, Synergy Research Group, CBRE, JLL and Uptime Institute). Every quote was checked against the source page on the update date. Definitions differ widely: Gartner counts data center hardware, IDC counts AI servers and storage, Dell'Oro and JLL include buildings and physical infrastructure, and company capex covers all property and equipment, not only data centers. Census data centers sit inside the private office category and are not reported separately in the headline release. Company figures follow each company's own fiscal calendar, and forecasts are revised often, so treat them as point-in-time estimates. Every quote is re-fetched from the source by our checker.
