In the U.S., a record 81 million people held a gym or studio membership in 2025, per the Health & Fitness Association, and members paid an average of $59 a month in HFA's 2024 data. Europe's clubs earned EUR 39.1 billion from 75.5 million members in 2025, per EuropeActive and Deloitte.

This page covers what people spend on fitness and who collects it: the size of the global physical activity market, U.S. and European gym membership, membership prices, results at listed gym operators, connected fitness and wearables, and fitness jobs and pay. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026; a few price figures from 2024 are labeled as such. Sources include the Health & Fitness Association, the Global Wellness Institute, EuropeActive and Deloitte, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the CDC and company filings with the SEC.
Fitness is a large consumer market built on many small monthly payments. The Global Wellness Institute values physical activity at $1,143.9 billion in 2024, of which $541.3 billion is spending on actually taking part in sports, fitness and mindful movement, and it projects $1,463.6 billion by 2029. Fitness technology alone reached $85.9 billion. In the U.S., the Health & Fitness Association counts 81 million gym and studio members in 2025, 26.1% of people aged six and older.
Prices span a wide range. HFA's 2024 data put the average U.S. membership at $59 a month, while 41% of facility users paid $25 or less. Planet Fitness raised its basic price from $10 to $15 a month in 2024, the first increase since 1998. Members are pushing for flexibility more than discounts: in Wellhub's 2026 survey of gym owners, 66% hear requests for shorter or more flexible contracts and 46% hear requests for lower prices. Oura charges $349 to $499 for its ring plus $5.99 a month in the U.S., which shows how hardware makers now add subscription revenue.
Operators had a strong 2025: HFA's benchmarking survey found median revenue up 10.7% at a 22.1% median EBITDA margin, and 92.3% of operators in its global survey expect more revenue in 2026. Listed operators show both ends of the market growing. Planet Fitness reached about 21.5 million members and $1.4 billion in quarterly system-wide sales by mid-2026, with same-club sales up 1.7%. Life Time, a premium club chain, grew Q3 2026 revenue 14.2% to $893.5 million on only 2.2% more memberships, which means most of its growth came from higher spending per member. In Europe, EuropeActive and Deloitte report revenue up 9.1% against membership up 5.8% in 2025, the same pattern of yield rising faster than headcount.
Connected fitness is mixed. Garmin's fitness segment grew 16% in Q3 2026 and Oura's revenue rose 74% in nine months to $1,214.5 million, while Peloton's paid connected fitness subscriptions fell 8.8% to 2.553 million and it expects revenue to decline in fiscal 2027. Behind all this, the BLS counts 388,400 fitness trainer jobs with a median wage of $47,160, and the CDC links $192 billion in annual U.S. health care costs to inadequate aerobic activity.
Global fitness market size
The Global Wellness Institute's physical activity sector includes far more than gyms: it counts sports and recreation, fitness, mindful movement, equipment, apparel and fitness technology. Apparel and footwear is the largest single piece, and spending on participation is just under half the total. GWI expects the sector to grow about 5.1% a year to 2029. These are modeled estimates that combine many data sources, so they are best used for scale rather than precise year-to-year change.

U.S. gym and studio membership
U.S. gym membership hit a record in 2025 and members are using their memberships more. The share of members who never visited fell to 4.6%, which matters for value: a membership that is used costs far less per visit. Growth is broad, with Gen Z adults most likely to belong and members over 65 growing fastest. The HFA figures come from a national tracking survey of about 18,000 people aged six and older, so they are estimates with sampling error.

Membership prices and subscription fees
Fitness prices run from about $15 a month at budget gyms to far more at premium clubs. HFA's 2024 average of $59 a month sits well above what many members pay, since 41% pay $25 or less, and Planet Fitness waited 26 years to lift its base price. Operator surveys suggest members now push for flexible contracts more than for lower prices. The $59 average and the Planet Fitness increase date from 2024 and the Wellhub figures come from a survey commissioned by a corporate wellness platform, so treat them as context rather than current list prices.

Gym operators and U.S. economic footprint
Budget and premium gyms are both growing, but in different ways. Planet Fitness adds clubs and members with small price increases, so its same-club sales grew 1.7%. Life Time grew revenue more than 14% with only 2% more memberships, because each member pays more in dues and in-club services. Boutique studios are weaker: Xponential's North American sales were flat. Survey data from HFA show the same strength across operators worldwide, though respondents are self-selected. System-wide sales include franchisee sales, which are larger than the franchisor's own revenue.

Connected fitness and wearables
Wearables are where fitness hardware money is growing. Garmin's fitness segment and Oura both posted strong growth, and Oura now earns a fifth of its revenue from membership fees. Peloton shows the opposite path: subscriptions are shrinking and the company expects lower revenue in fiscal 2027. Company fiscal years differ (Oura's ends in September, Peloton's in June), so compare growth rates rather than totals.

Fitness jobs, pay and the cost of inactivity
Fitness work pays slightly below the U.S. median wage, but demand for trainers is projected to grow much faster than average. On the other side of the ledger, the CDC ties a large share of health care spending to people who are not active enough, which is the public health case for gym access. Methodology note
We selected figures on fitness spending, prices and market size, preferring 2025 and 2026 data from the organizations that collected it. Market size estimates from the Global Wellness Institute are modeled from many sources and include equipment, apparel and technology, not just gyms. U.S. membership figures come from the Health & Fitness Association's annual survey of about 18,000 people; European figures from the EuropeActive and Deloitte market report and are in euros. Price figures from 2024 are marked as such and may have changed. Operator figures from HFA's benchmarking and global surveys and from Wellhub's survey of gym owners are self-reported by participating businesses. Company figures come from SEC filings, use different fiscal years and include non-GAAP measures such as system-wide sales, which count franchisee sales the companies do not book as revenue.
