Cheap Web Hosting Renewal Prices: Intro vs Real Cost
Most cheap hosts renew at 2 to 14 times their introductory price, so the headline monthly rate says little about what a site costs to keep. On published prices, Hostinger is cheapest over a 4-year term at $95.52, while InterServer has the lowest steady renewal at $84 a year.

Cheap web hosting is cheap for the first term only. Across the nine shared hosts in our cheapest web hosting ranking, entry plans renew at 2 to 14 times the advertised intro rate, and the lowest monthly figures usually require paying for one to four years upfront. The host with the lowest sticker price, IONOS Plus at $1 a month, has one of the highest renewals at $14. The one with the lowest steady price, InterServer, never discounts heavily in the first place. To pick well, add the first term to the renewal years you expect to keep the site, then compare totals.
Intro price vs renewal price for 9 cheap hosts

|---|---|---|---|---|
| IONOS Plus | $1/mo | 12 months | $14/mo | 14x |
| ChemiCloud Starter | $1.49/mo | 36 months | $11.95/mo (regular price) | 8x |

| ScalaHosting Mini | $2.95/mo | Intro offer | $11.95/mo | 4x |

Our data has no renewal figure for hosting.com, which does not show one next to its headline offer, or for Namecheap, so check both rates at checkout before choosing a long term.
What a site really costs over 4 and 6 years
The fair way to compare is to total the first term and the renewal years. The figures below use each host's published intro price for the term shown, then the published monthly renewal or regular rate times 12 for each later year. Renewal rates can differ by term length, so treat them as estimates and confirm at checkout.
| Host and plan | First term cost | Each renewal year | 4-year total | 6-year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinger Premium | $95.52 (48 months) | $131.88 | $95.52 | $359.28 |
| ChemiCloud Starter | $53.64 (36 months) | $143.40 | $197.04 | $483.84 |
| Bluehost Starter | $143.64 (36 months) | $119.88 | $263.52 | $503.28 |
| InterServer Standard | $30 (12 months) | $84 | $282 | $450 |
| IONOS Essential | $48 (12 months) | $96 | $336 | $528 |
| IONOS Plus | $12 (12 months) | $168 | $516 | $852 |
| GreenGeeks Lite | $35.40 (12 months) | $167.40 | $537.60 | $872.40 |
Three conclusions follow from the arithmetic:
- Long prepays win if the site lasts the full term. Hostinger's 48-month prepay works out to $1.99 a month for four years, and ChemiCloud's 36-month plan to $1.49 a month for three. Nothing else here comes close over those periods.
- Low renewals win over long horizons. By year six, InterServer's flat $84 a year makes it cheaper than ChemiCloud and Bluehost, and within $91 of Hostinger.
- The $1 offer is the most expensive to keep. IONOS Plus costs $12 in year one, then $168 a year. Over six years it costs $324 more than IONOS Essential, the plan that looks four times pricier on the sales page.
Why hosting renewals jump so much
The ranking's buying guide puts first-term discounts at 60% to 94% off the regular rate. Hosts recover that discount at renewal, and many customers renew without checking. The same pattern shows up across subscriptions: UK government estimates attribute about 1.3 million unwanted subscriptions to auto-renewals (subscription economy statistics).
Domains follow a similar renewal logic. Verisign reports that 75.2% of .com and .net domains due for renewal in the second quarter of 2026 were renewed (web hosting statistics). Several hosts here include a free domain for the first year only, so the domain renewal is a second bill to plan for.
How to choose the right term length
Match the prepay term to how long you are confident the site will run on that host.
- Testing an idea or a short campaign: take a short term. InterServer sells a first month for $2.50, ChemiCloud charges $1 for the first month on monthly billing, and Namecheap Stellar has a 30-day free trial.
- A site you will keep for 2 to 3 years: compare 12-month and 36-month totals. ChemiCloud's 36-month Starter at $53.64 is the cheapest three years in our data if one website is enough.
- A long-term site: a 48-month Hostinger prepay at $95.52 is the lowest four-year total. If you expect to stay longer, also price InterServer, whose renewal is the lowest in the ranking.
- Several sites: check site limits first. ChemiCloud Starter and ScalaHosting Mini host one website, Hostinger Premium three, GreenGeeks Lite five and Bluehost Starter ten.
Ways to avoid paying full renewal rates
- Set a reminder 60 days before renewal and decide then whether to renew, change plan or move.
- Downgrade at renewal if the site is small. IONOS Essential renews at $8 a month against $14 for Plus.
- Move to another host's intro offer. Free migration is offered by ChemiCloud, Namecheap, ScalaHosting and hosting.com, and InterServer offers free migration help. Moving resets the intro discount, at the cost of some setup time.
- Use the refund window. Most hosts here give 30 days, and ChemiCloud 45, so you can test speed and support before the full term is locked in.
- Do not pay for SSL. Let's Encrypt went from serving 492 million websites to 762 million in 2025 (web hosting statistics), and IONOS, Namecheap, GreenGeeks, Bluehost and hosting.com all include free SSL on their entry plans.
When a cloud server beats shared hosting
If you are comfortable managing a server, entry-level cloud prices sit below most shared hosting renewals, and they do not jump after year one. DigitalOcean's Droplets start at $4 a month, and AWS Lightsail runs a Linux instance with 1 GB of memory, a 40 GB SSD and 2 TB of transfer for $5 a month (web hosting statistics). AWS's own example prices a WordPress site with a CDN and object storage at $8.50 a month. Static sites can run on platforms such as Cloudflare Workers, whose paid plan has a $5 monthly minimum.
The trade-off is time: you handle updates, backups and security yourself. Shared hosting is still the easier choice for most small sites; just buy it with the renewal price in mind.
FAQ
Which cheap web host has the lowest renewal price?
InterServer, at $7 a month on monthly billing or $84 a year after a $30 first year. Among the hosts that publish a renewal rate, Bluehost Starter at $9.99 is next, and IONOS Plus is highest at $14.
Is it worth prepaying 3 or 4 years for hosting?
Yes, if you are confident the site will run that long. Hostinger's 48-month Premium term costs $95.52 in total and ChemiCloud's 36-month Starter $53.64, the lowest totals in our data for those periods. If you might shut the site down or move, a 12-month term limits the risk.
How much does cheap hosting cost after the first year?
Most entry plans in our ranking renew between $7 and $14 a month, or $84 to $168 a year. That is 2 to 14 times the advertised intro price.
Can I keep the intro price by switching hosts?
Switching to a new host usually means paying its introductory rate for the first term again. Several hosts in our ranking offer free migration, which lowers the effort of moving at renewal time.
